PENNISETUM SETACEUM 'CUPREUM'

Cette graminée décorative est originaire d'Afrique de l'Ouest (Éthiopie). Elle est vivace par sa souche qui grossit d'année en année pour former une belle touffe. Les tiges atteignent 160 à 180 cm de haut et sont terminées par des inflorescences duveteuses. La couleur des feuilles, qui est l'attrait essentiel de la plante, va du rouge sombre au brun rougeâtre selon l'exposition et le substrat de plantation. La plante gagne à être rabattue à quelques cm du sol deux à trois fois par an en zone tropicale ou subtropicale et une fois l'an en région tempérée, au début de l'hiver, après quoi la souche sera paillée pour l'hiver car ne supportant pas le gel. Un substrat profond, bien drainant et enrichi en compost et fumier vieux sera garant de réussite, la plante pouvant également se plaire en terrain sableux, en plein soleil comme à mi-ombre. La multiplication se fait facilement par éclats de souche au printemps.

'Red fountain grass'

A highly decorative grass from Western Africa (Ethiopia), it is a perennial due to its stump growing bigger year after year and rapidly forming a good sized plant. The stems reach 160 to 180 cm (5 to 6 feet) high ending in downy inflorescences. The narrow arching leaves have dark red to reddish brown color depending on the exposure and growing substrate. The plant will benefit to be cut back to a few cm high two or three times a year in tropical or subtropical area and once a year as winter starts in temperate areas where mulching will have to be used in order to protect the stump from freezing. A deep well manured drained soil will be perfect though it will grow fine in sandy soils, either in full sun or semi-shaded place. Propagation is done by clump division in spring.
