'Longani, oeil du dragon'

Le longanier, originaire de Chine et d'Inde, est un arbre au feuillage dense, à cime arrondie, pouvant atteindre dix mètres de haut. Les fruits, en grappe, ont la taille d'une cerise et sont recouvertes d'une peau assez coriace jaune-brun. Celle-ci renferme une pulpe, en fait un arille, translucide et de saveur délicate.

Cet arbre fruitier se multiplie par semis ou greffage de variétés intéressantes, le porte greffe état bien sûr issu de semis. La mise à fruit de plants issus de semis est relativement lente, environ huit ans. Le longanier pousse à la Réunion du niveau de la mer jusqu'à 500 ou 600 mètres d'altitude. Il préfère des sols profonds et riches en humus mais peut se contenter de conditions moins propices, pouvant supporter une certaine sécheresse.

'Longan'

Native of China and India, this tree has a thick foliage and a rounded top, growing to ten meters (30 feet) high. The fruits are born in clusters, the size of a cherry and are covered by a rather thick brown-yellow skin. The flesh is translucent, with a delicate aroma.

Propagated by seeds or grafting of interesting varietys, the rootstock obtained through seeds of course, a plant obtained from a seed will take a rather long time to produce fruits; about eight years. On Reunion island, it grows from sea-level to 500-600 meters high. It will grow better in deep rich soils but will also grow in a variety of soils, able to stand some dryness.
